Love in "To His Coy Mistress", "Shall I Compare Thee," "Let Me Not," and "The Flea" The four poems I am going to be comparing are, â€Å"To His Coy Mistress,† â€Å"Shall I Compare Thee,† â€Å"Let Me Not,† and â€Å"The Flea.† All four of these poems are based on the subject matter of love. The four poems have a lot in common but each poem touches a different aspect of love. Two of the poems, â€Å"Shall I Compare Thee†, and â€Å"Let Me Not†, are sonnets and both were written by Shakespeare. â€Å"To His Coy Mistress† is written by Andrew Marvell and â€Å"The Flea† was written by John Donne. All four of the poems have three parts to them each posing a different argument. I will be analysing and comparing the four poems in the purpose of the poem, the nature of love, the effect of outside influences on their love, the form of the poem and the techniques the poets use convincingly. The main purpose of ‘To His Coy Mistress’ is to persuade Marvell’s mistress to consummate their relationship together, this is also the same purpose of ‘The Flea’. The other purposes are to brag about how good he is at writing; this is shown in his arrogant style of writing. It is for seduction, a satire of legal persuasive speech and the final purpose is a reminder of mortality, and they should seize the day. It also says that the woman is very shy and that if they had all the world but enough time so being shy is not a crime, this is shown in the opening lines, â€Å"Had we but world enough, and time, This coyness, Lady, were no crime.† Phrases such as, â€Å"amorous birds of prey,† and â€Å"tear our pleasures† show that they consummate their relationship. â€Å"Time’s wingà ¨d chariot hurrying near†, is a reminder that death will soon dawn upon then and so there is more reason ... ...hat he is a fantastic writer. All four of the poems are very persuasive and are written effectively by the poets’ techniques. ‘Shall I Compare Thee’ and ‘Let Me Not’ are both romantic and flatter the lady Shakespeare is writing for. Both the sonnets make Shakespeare’s loved one seem extremely special and Shakespeare does it convincingly. ‘To His Coy Mistress’ is humorous in places and maintains the politeness throughout the poem. ‘To His Coy Mistress’ is also very persuasive and Marvell convinces his beloved to consummate their relationship. ‘The Flea’ is effective because a flea is so insignificant but the way the poet describes it makes it seem so important. All of the poems are very similar and definitely have many similarities between them, the main one is obviously love but they all talk about death being the main outside influence on their love.

The Preamble of the Constitution of the United States is followed by 7 articles: Article 1- The Legislative Branch Article 2- The Executive Branch Article 3- The Judicial Branch Article 4- The States Article 5- Amendment Article 6- Debts, Supremacy, Oaths Article 7- Ratification Now I could go all into what each branch does and what the States and Debts are but I’m going to trust you know a little bit about our Constitution. Next is our Amendments or better known as the Bill of Rights. They are exactly what the name says. A bill, meaning document, of rights We, the People of the United States are entitled to from birth. The rights we are granted by this are sometimes disregarded by officers of corrections in any field. For example, Amendment 5 states, â€Å"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.† You are innocent until proven guilty. In most cases the suspected criminal is put behind bars for twelve months awaiting a trial and is not even guilty once a trial has ended. The suspected criminal gets no form of reimbursement in any way for losing a year of his life. After all, how can you give a person back a year of their lives? Another example I would like to bring to the table is the Stages of Disorganization Theory. The Stages of Disorganization Theory states, â€Å"Poverty leads to Social Disorganization leads to Breakdown of Social Control leads to Criminal Areas leads to Cultural Transmission leads to Criminal Careers.† This basically means once a criminal always a criminal. The American Legal System understands criminals will always be around, causing jobs in law enforcement to around. Recently a lot of police lost jobs due to economic crises, but if you pay attention to the news you can count down the days till the state prisons will start a population cut. It is obvious to see that jobs in law enforcement will rise again on a count that there will be convicted criminals in the street categorized under the Stages of Disorganization Theory. And remember, once a criminal always a criminal right? Quid pro quo indicates a more-or-less equal exchange or substitution of goods or services. English speakers often use the term to mean a favor for a favor and the phrases with almost identical meaning include: what for what, give and take, tit for tat, this for that, and you scratch my back, and Ill scratch yours. People are often excused from the law under this act. For example, prostitution is an illegal act but it remains common and lawful to use gifts, expensive meals and so on, as a means of attracting a sexual partner. In this case the term prostitution is not even considered. The enticing act would be more along the line as wine and dining. The Station fire in the Angeles National Forest that is burning right now as we speak has claimed over eighteen homes and two lives. The fire was thought at first to be accidental but now proved to be self started. Whoever started the fire is now in more trouble then they can imagine. It started off with simple arson, and led up to murder or manslaughter. This is another example on how the law works in mysterious ways. However, yes the guy or girl did start the fire, but they had no participation in telling the fire fighters whose lives were taken by the fire to go and join in putting the fire out. The suspected criminal obviously has no ties or ways to communicate with the firemen and did not commit murder in a face to face malicious act. To tell you the truth, if you have money or great political ties, you’re innocent nine out of ten times. If by some chance you are guilty, you will get charged with simply a misdemeanor or a charge far less deserving of what you did. You have to think about this, a public attorney sees about 160 people at a time, when will he or she have enough time for you? People that are more financially equipped can get private attorneys and actually have a fighting chance at a case without being put in debt. See it’s quite simple, once a criminal always a criminal. Adding to the case are charges against a former Antiguan official who has allegedly taken bribes from Stanford and his companies, a lawsuit against insurance group Lloyds of London by Allen Stanford, and a lawsuit by investors against Stanford’s auditing firm BDO. Despite the fact that his Chief Financial Officer testified against him in a plea bargain agreement, Stanford pleads not guilty to all charges. Adding drama to this high profile case, Stanford required medical treatment after getting beaten in prison and claims to have developed amnesia. The Stanford International Bank offered returns that were consistently double digits on its CDs. In their pitch to investors, SIB employees claimed it was due to smart portfolio management and investment in safe, liquid securities. SIB also claimed that a team of 20 talented analysts manage the portfolios carefully. However, the SEC claims that this is all false. In its complaint filed in February 2009, the SEC described Stanford’s operation as a â€Å"massive ponzi scheme. † The CDs were not reinvested in liquid securities – SIB’s portfolio mainly consisted of illiquid assets like real estate. The value of these assets was grossly overstated to pad the company’s financial reports. SIB offered returns based on fabricated performance data and claiming as historical data and portfolio management was done solely by Stanford and the CFO, James Davis. In addition, Stanford misappropriated more than $1 billion of investors’ funds. The money went to a fleet of yachts and jets, hosting an international cricket match, Caribbean real estate and bribing Antiguan regulators. Another layer of Stanford’s deception was the assurance of BDO, an independent auditing firm that issued unqualified audits of Stanford’s companies. Investors have filed a $10. 7 billion suit against BDO for â€Å"ignoring signs of potential fraud. (Bloomberg) Investors also claim that BDO should have been aware that Stanford’s company â€Å"was operating as an unregistered hedge fund illegally disguising itself as a bank. †(Bloomberg) The complaint also calls into question BDO’s close relationship with Stanford Financial Group and raises issues about conflict of interest. The SEC claims that Stanford International Bank sold unregistered CDs. Had they been registered, the SEC would have been able to verify the value of the CDs. The SEC suggests that the scheme goes back to at least 1995 where the bank reported identical returns in consecutive years. The SEC also charges Stanford and his companies of not cooperating with the SEC’s investigation and claims that about 90% of their investment portfolios â€Å"reside in a black box shielded from any independent oversight†( SEC v. Stanford International Bank, Ltd. , et al. ) Ironically, Stanford has sued SEC, the FBI, and members of the Justice Department for preventing redemption of CDs by investors by freezing his companies’ accounts. The SEC also took action to help compensate investors by filing suit against Securities Investor Protection Corp (SIPC) in order to force the company to pay investors. The SEC is getting heavily involved and taking a very aggressive stance in this case likely due to heightened alert from the recent Madoff Ponzi scheme. Stanford’s assets have been seized by the authorities and are in the process of liquidation. Auditors that are reviewing financial statements of investors that were involved in the Stanford case will have difficulty assessing how much their clients can recover. It is difficult to track investors’ funds in Stanford’s portfolio since it was managed by two people who worked in secret and because the CDs were unregistered with the SEC. The case is still undecided as Stanford is pleading not guilty. On another front, the SIPC is being coerced by SEC’s lawsuit to compensate investors but the SIPC plans to defend itself. On yet another front, some of the investors are involved in the lawsuit against BDO. In an audit of an investor involved in this case, it would be difficult to value the client’s portfolio. Some investors may face business risk contingent on the outcome of these trials. Investors seeking securities in off-shore banks should always consider the saying â€Å"if it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t. Investors should also look into the regulatory environment of the institution. While off-shore banks claim that savings from less regulation is translated into better returns, it should raise flags when it consistently performs above market for 15 years. BDO’s reports should have also raised flags as it did not examine Stanford’s portfolio.
